Staff learning and development continues to be pivotal to ensuring human performance improvement throughout the organization and as such is linked to CXC’s organizational strategic priorities. 

The main focus areas of learning and development initiatives at CXC focus on:

  1. Current job performance improvement – job related developmental areas as identified by the employee assessments and developmental plans.
  2. Organizational capacity – associated with the implementation of new software and our focus on continuous improvement.
  3. Professional development – to ensure that staff gain new knowledge and remain updated about developments in their areas of expertise.
  4. Educational programmes/ Personal benefits – individually initiated development goals of staff.

It must be noted that as of 30 September 2018, there were three approved requests for funding for employee initiated programmes, one from 2017 and two from 2018.  These included the following:

  • Partial funding towards a Doctoral Programme in Educational Leadership;
  • Partial funding towards a Certificate in Management Studies; and
  • Partial funding towards a Masters Programme in Business Administration.

Key learning and development initiatives for the year included:

  • The ISO 9000 conference in Las Vegas, Nevada which was attended by Ms Angela Lowe and Ms Sandra Fitzpatrick;
  • The Administering SQL Server Course in Barbados which was attended by Ms Sherry Brathwaite and Mrs Sheldine Robinson;
  • The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Talent conference and exposition in Las Vegas, Nevada which was attended by Mrs Deborah Currency-Hunte;

  • The Distinguished Leadership and Innovation Conference (DLIC) in Trinidad and Tobago which was attended by Mrs Sharon Armstrong-Mullah, Mr Andre Blair, Mrs Sheree Deslandes, Mr Keone James, Mrs Keisha Laurie, Mr Sean Wilson and Ms Kath-Ema Armstrong;
  • The Canada Editors Conference in Saskatchewan, Canada which was attended by Mrs La-Raine Carpenter Andrews;
  • The Crisis Communication Master Class that in Chicago, Detroit which was attended by Mr Cleveland Sam;
  • The Cave Hill School of Business Executive Leadership Programme 2018 in Miami which was attended by Mr Glenroy Cumberbatch, Mr Rodney Payne and Mrs Deborah Currency-Hunte;
  • Several SAGE ACCPACC courses which were attended according to relevance by Finance and Office Management staff;
  • The Barbados Employers Confederation workshop Introduction to Change Management that was attended by Mr Anthony Alleyne, Ms Dianne Medford, and Ms Paula Nicholls;
  • The visit by Ms Paula Nicholls to RM in the UK;
  • The Gallup workshop Creating an Engaging Workplace for Engagement Champions in Chicago, Detroit which was attended by Mrs Deborah Currency-Hunte and Mr Atiba Griffith;
  • The International Association for Educational Assessment (IAEA) conference in Oxford, UK which was attended by Dr Wayne Wesley
  • Several staff members participated in training to become certified TVET Assessors.  Two participants in the face-to-face sessions certified as Level 2 Assessors: Roslyn Harewood-Blackman and La-Raine Carpenter, two other participants in the face-to-face submitted portfolios and are awaiting final interview: Veronica Alleyne and Donna Giles.  In the online training, one participant submitted her portfolio and is awaiting final interview: Kath-Ema Armstrong.

In addition, four members of the Joint Health and Safety Committee attended a one-day Seminar at the Barbados Hilton focusing on Emerging Issues in Health and Safety in the Workplace.
