SYLLABUSES UNDER REVIEW

LAW

The Review Committee, at its meeting held in September 2015, the Committee reviewed all aspects of the syllabus, with the main aim of identifying the competencies, knowledge and attitudes that students might reasonably be expected to demonstrate. The committee also revisited the General Objectives to encompass the scope of the revised Specific Objectives and Content. The Specific Objectives were clarified to delimit the breadth and depth to which the knowledge and skills in each Module should be covered; and the content areas revisited to ensure that they were specific, current and relevant. The Suggested Teaching and Learning Activities were revised to provide needed guidance to teachers.

The following is a summary of the actions taken:

  1. Clarification and elaboration of General and Specific Objectives, and Content.
  2. Revision of the structure of Paper 02, eliminating the current options to reflect the Council’s policy of giving all compulsory questions, thus rendering it more psychometrically robust.
  3. Revision of the guidelines for the School-Based Assessment to ensure that the teachers can adequately use the information to guide candidates to demonstrate competence in the skills and abilities identified in the syllabus as relevant to the field of law.

The draft syllabus was submitted to the April 2016 meeting of SUBSEC requesting approval to complete the revision of the syllabus. Approval was granted. The draft syllabus was sent to resource persons and other stakeholders for comments. A Panel meeting will be convened in January 2017 to complete the revision of the syllabus. The final draft of the syllabus along with the specimen examination papers, keys and mark schemes will be submitted to SUBSEC in April 2017, for approval. The approved syllabus and copies of the specimen examination papers, keys and mark schemes will be distributed to schools in May–June 2017, for first examination in May–June 2018.

LITERATURES IN ENGLISH

The Review Committee, at its meeting held in April 2016, reviewed all aspects of the syllabus, with the main aim of revising the Rationale and Aims to incorporate the attributes of the Ideal Caribbean Person and the UNESCO Pillars of Learning. The committee also revisited the Specific Objectives and the Outline of Assessment to facilitate the writing of items to conform to e-testing format. The content areas were revisited to ensure that they were specific, current, relevant and in keeping with the philosophical and psychological considerations for syllabus development. The lists of prescribed texts were also revised to include texts that better meet the needs of Caribbean learners.

The Review Committee developed a draft syllabus with revised Rationale and Aims to reflect the attributes of the Ideal Caribbean Person, UNESCO Pillars of Learning and other areas for consideration based on the political, philosophical and psychological considerations for syllabus development. The Committee also revised and refined the General Objectives for all Sections, the Suggested Teaching and Learning Activities and the Glossary of Literary Concepts. The lists of prescribed texts for the 2018–2022 examinations for the Modules in Units 1 and 2 were also updated. Additionally, the format of Paper 01 was changed from a short-answer paper to one that consists of 45 multiple-choice items to facilitate e-marking and e-testing.

NEWLY DEVELOPED SYLLABUSES

FINANCIAL SERVICES STUDIES

The final Panel meeting to refine the syllabus document and develop the specimen examination papers, keys and mark schemes for Financial Services Studies was held in February 2016. The final draft of the syllabus along with specimen examination papers, keys and mark schemes were submitted to SUBSEC in April 2016, for approval. The approved syllabus and copies of the specimen examination papers, keys and mark schemes were distributed to schools in May–June 2016, for first examination in May–June 2017.

GREEN ENGINEERING

At its meeting of April 2014, SUBSEC received the Concept Paper for the development of a CAPE® syllabus in Green Engineering. The meeting of Working Committee for Green Engineering was held in August 2014 and the Panel meeting in October 2014 to develop the first draft of the syllabus. First draft of the syllabus was circulated to resource persons for comments. A second Panel meeting was held in March 2015 to refine the syllabus document and develop the specimen examination papers, keys and mark schemes. The first draft of the syllabus along with specimen examination papers, keys and mark schemes were submitted to SUBSEC in October 2015, requesting approval to complete the development of the syllabus. Approval was granted. The draft syllabus was sent to resource persons and other stakeholders for comments. A Panel meeting was convened in November 2015 to complete the development of the syllabus. The final draft of the syllabus along with specimen examination papers, keys and mark schemes were submitted to SUBSEC in April 2016, for approval. The approved syllabus and copies of the specimen examination papers, keys and mark schemes were released to schools in May–June 2016, for first examination in May–June 2017.
